Seven PECAM riders gathered at Peterborough Services for a 6.30pm briefing before heading off on a 40-mile evening ride to the Twisted Trout at Empingham.
With a small group of qualified riders, we used the Intelligent Buddy System, allowing the ride to flow at a brisk but legal pace while everyone could enjoy some excellent roads without the need for a formal drop-off system.
And excellent roads they were. From Folksworth we headed towards Oundle, then on through Kings Cliffe before enjoying the wonderfully flowing twists and turns up towards Bulwick. Crossing the A43, the route continued through Laxton before passing beneath the magnificent Harringworth Viaduct — twice, because apparently once is never quite enough — and on towards Ketton.
From there it was over the quarry roads, around Rutland Water and finally into Empingham and the Twisted Trout.
We were particularly fortunate with the weather. The earlier sunshine had clouded over just enough to avoid spending the westbound journey squinting into a low evening sun, while still leaving us with warm, dry roads to enjoy.
The Twisted Trout was hosting its regular bike night, although numbers were a little sparse on this occasion. Still, with 25% off drinks for bikers, food available and plenty of time for the customary PECAM chat, nobody was complaining.
As the light began to fade, it was time to head for home after another cracking evening on the bikes.
