Sunday 25th January – Change of Plan Ride Out

Blog by Bob Armstrong

Five riders set off from Haddon Services, under a dull, overcast sky, the roads just damp enough to keep everyone sharp.

A touch of early drizzle lingered, but nothing serious – just that light grey start that settles you into the day.

The B660 flowed nicely through Great Gidding and on towards Kimbolton, with the group finding an easy rhythm despite the muted weather.

Staughton Moor brought is usual wide-open feel, the low cloud giving the landscape a soft, atmospheric look.

The riders made smooth progress across the moor, enjoying the quiet roads and easy pace.

By the time we reached the Danish Camp, the drizzle had faded, making the warm drinks, breakfast butties, even cake and ice cream and mid-ride chat even more welcoming.

The return  leg was a change of plan and not the original destination point, as the group approached Grafham Water, the sky broke just enough for a little sunlight to catch the reservoir, leaving the water clear and bright against the grey surroundings.

From there, the route would through the Offords and into Godmanchester, the roads still damp but easy-going.

The final stop at Costa, Huntingdon wrapped things up perfectly – bikes parked, coffees and more cake in hand (unfortunately no ice cream), and that familiar PECAM satisfaction after a steady, scenic loop.

All in all a nice little rideout with great company.
