It started dry at Haddon… then it wasn’t. So we didn’t. But then it slackened off, so we did.

Seven hardy souls braved the ‘drizzle’ for a spirited ride that defied the forecast. The original plan was to head out via Helpston and along King Street, but with the usual quarry mud lurking, we opted for a cleaner route: parkways to Langtoft, then a cut across to Greatford. That’s where we got to practise our U-turns—thanks to a surprise road closure. Had Evel Knievel been with us, he’d have jumped it and beaten us to the other side.

After a brief detour, we rejoined the route just beyond the blockage. The rain soon gave up, and the roads began to dry. We meandered through the Rutland countryside, eventually joining the B6047 at Tilton on the Hill.

Next stop: Langton Garden Centre for a well-earned bite. Ham, egg, and chips was the order of the day for me, simple, satisfying, and just what was needed.

With bellies full, we rolled down the A6 for a couple of miles before turning onto the B664. That stretch delivered a glorious thrash through sweeping bends and humpback bridges all the way to Uppingham. A right turn to Caldecott led us onto the B672, serving up another helping of grin-inducing curves.

Then came the Blatherwycke–King’s Cliffe bends, always a treat. The satnav had a meltdown and kept insisting we turn around, but I knew better… or so I thought. Still, we made it back to Peterborough without a single U-turn and wrapped up the ride at Starbucks in Orton.

By then, the sun was out and the mercury nudging 20°C, leaving us all hilariously overdressed for the occasion.
