On Sunday 13th October the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service delivered to the PECAM Members a Biker Down training course.
Biker Down helps members with the confidence and necessary knowledge to help effectively, should an incident arise.
There were three modules delivered on this course. The first module dealt with incident management, and what to do when you arrive at the scene. It is vital that you keep yourself safe, if you put yourself at risk, then you will not be able to help those in need. Look after yourself, look after the team (if any) with you, and then deal with the victim or victims of the incident.
The second module dealt with the hands-on practical techniques for saving lives. Using the ubiquitous Resusci Anne, we were able to get hands on with CPR and also the very important Helmet removal, should it be necessary. It is always important to retrain and refresh your knowledge of first-aid as new techniques and new thinking change the best way to provide the most effective help.
The third module dealt with using the motorcycle on the road and how to best be seen and be safe. As motorcyclists we know we are the most vulnerable road user, with more deaths and serious injuries that any other group, including cyclists. Therefore, we must employ the best advanced rider training to ensure we see what is ahead, we anticipate what is going to happen and we allow for motorists who we know will not see us in a high percentage of situations.
Most important lesson was the need to look after yourself, look after the team (if any) with you, and then deal with the victim or victims of the incident.

Biker Down training is unusual, in that its focus is on helping others. Just remember that every casualty will have someone at home who would want you help, the best way that you can. Your help is more effective with knowledge and training.
